Frequently Asked Golf Questions

frequently asked questions for professional golf coach linda edwards and let it fly golf!
  • Q: Grip: Weak or Strong???

A: That is an individual preference based on your swing tendencies. A normal grip should be below heel pad of lead hand with "V" pointing just inside rear shoulder.

  • Q: I think I have a problem with my posture?

A: Check for your shoulders and feet both being in line like railroad tracks. Try using a golf club on the ground for alignment to help with set-up and posture. Make sure your knees are slightly relaxed and you have a good 30 degree lean at address.

  • Q: I have a really bad takeaway?

A: Try checking for proper ball position forward of center. Check for proper posture and body tilt. Make sure your lead arm is extended and trailing arm is relaxed.

  • Q: How do I stop slicing the ball?

A: Your grip needs to be under pad of top hand, with "V" pointing to rear shoulder. Move ball position back in stance but still forward of center, so that when you set the club down your shoulders will be parallel with the target line. Alignment should be parallel with the target line. You can do a walk through drill by placing a ball 15” forward of normal ball position and that will force you to transfer your weight.

  • Q: I am always hooking the ball - how can I stop this?

A: You can try neutralizing your grip with "V"s pointing more towards your chin. Move the ball position accordingly so that swing path at impact is toward the target.

  • Q: Pulling shots?

A: Try aligning yourself more parallel to the target line. Place the ball so that club path is traveling down the target line at impact. Try starting earlier with the lower body in transition: Start your back swing with a body turn rather that an arm swing.

  • Q: How do I know I am pushing everything right?

A: Alignment is key — make sure you are parallel with the target line. At the top of your back swing, majority of weight should be on the back foot with your chest over back foot: Rotate, rather than slide, hips to start downswing. At top of your back swing your lead arm should be parallel to initial shaft angle at address.

  • Q: How come I hit everything fat?

A: Your set-up is key — your arc should be fairly straight, your rear-end out (critical) knees should be slightly flexed. Place the ball just before the bottom of your swing arc either in center or forward of center in the swing.

  • Q: Where do you coach at?

A: I coach in generally two places - live on a local course at Laurel Hill Golf Course and I coach via video training within my office. Click here for information about Laurel Hill Golf Course and click here for my office location.
